My Gran is a Werewolf
Author David Macphail
Through Jess’s diary we discover her crazy quest – to save her dear old gran from being a werewolf. It starts when Gran is babysitting and starts behaving strangely. Then a werewolf turns up in Jess’s kitchen, wearing Gran’s clothes! Jess soon realises that her gran and the werewolf are one and the same. She needs to join forces with Jacob Galleon, werewolf expert, to save her gran from the werewolf hunter, Colonel Stamper. She doesn't have long – the next full moon is only a month away!
Chapter 1 Full Moon
Jess is often looked after by her frail, old gran. But tonight, Gran’s voice sounds a bit like a growl and she has big, wiry hairs growing out of her nostrils. Something isn’t right.
- Chapter 2 Secret of the Wolf
Gran is missing and there’s a werewolf in the shed. When a strange man called Stamper knocks on the door to ask if she’s heard any howling, Jess is wary. Where is Gran? Who, or what, is Stamper after?
- Chapter 3 The Wolf Hunters
Stamper is revealed as a werewolf hunter, and Jacob is revealed as the not-so-tough Keith Tripper. But Jacob can still save Gran. If only Gran would stop acting like a, well, werewolf!
- Chapter 4 The Potion
With the full moon approaching, Jess needs to find the ingredients to make the potion and cure Gran. But will she be able to save Gran in time or will Stamper, the werewolf hunter, get in her way?
- Chapter 5 A Wolf in the Blood
When Jess discovers that being a werewolf runs in the family, she must learn the ways of the wolf in order to keep the family secret. But, as the next full moon approaches, all is not as it seems...
The First Wolf Man
Legend has it that the first Werewolf was created by the Greek God, Zeus.
According to the famous Roman poet, Ovid, this was a man called Lycaon, who was King of a place called Arcadia. Zeus was angry with Lycaon for playing a practical joke on him, so Zeus turned him into a wolf.
And that, my friends, is where we get another word that is commonly used to describe Werewolves –
Many people would find this condition to be something of a hindrance, but not Lycaon. He went on to found a city and start up his own version of the Olympic games. GOOD DOGGIE!

- Check the Mirror. Are your eyebrows joining up in the middle?
- Are your hands hairier than normal? Are your fingernails growing into long, sharp claws?
- When you pass the butcher’s shop window do you find yourself drooling?
- How about your teeth? Your canines will be growing and becoming fang-like.
- Go back and check the mirror again. Do your ears hang low? Do they wobble to and fro? Low set ears mean the infection is getting stronger.
- Do you find people saying ‘Down Boy!” to you a lot?
- Finally, are you stronger than you used to be? Try lifting a car. Ouch! Okay, so you’re not a Werewolf.
